The Success of Dragon Age

The Backstory

Released on the second half of 2010, Dragon Age: Origins (developed by Bioware and published by Electronic Arts) has been quite a hit success among game fans across the console and PC worlds. The game describes a lush fantasy environment that does not try to stray far away from the typical genre cliches but uses them as powerful tools to create and embellish a complex world that ends up being a product far superior than the sum of its parts.

Bioware has big plans in store for its latest creative child it seems. The fantasy world created by them and loved by RPG fans throughout the world already received a very warm reception when it launched for the PC, Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 during last fall; the game itself had enough hype built around it by the time of release that it managed to sell better than Robbie Williams tickets among lustful teenagers. We recently saw the first fully fledged expansion for the game (there had been other downloadable content of more limited scope) called Dragon Age: Origins – Awakening Continuing the story where the original game left off, the expansion gives its eager players new locations to explore, characters to know and story to see unfold.

Dragon Age, the Comic Book

Fans will have more than the expansion to dive into the world of Ferelden. This month, the Dragon Age series launches on a different medium under the EA Comics imprint. Co-written by industry giants Aaron Johnston and Orson Scott Card, the comic is illustrated by Mark Robinson with inks by Jason P. Martin. The comic is filled with fan love and won’t disappoint followers of the franchise: the rules and mythology are the same, but now new characters and stories are introduced.

The story was heavily influenced by the conflictive interaction between Mages and Templars co-existing on the Circle Tower as showcased by the game. The book will follow a group of young mages that are collected by the Templars and brought to the Circle Tower for training. Will will of course see the other staple creatures from the universe show up but the emphasis will clearly be on this group of characters.

If getting back to Ferelden to see the tale of new heroes excites you, you might want to put aside some money and tell Robbie he won’t be getting any tickets for concerts from you this time.
